US Department of State Plans $400M Purchase of Tesla Armored Vehicles Amid Musk’s Push for Government Cuts

The US Department of State is planning to spend $400 million on Tesla armored vehicles, raising potential conflicts of interest for Elon Musk, who is simultaneously leading efforts to slash government spending under the Trump administration.

Tesla’s Cybertruck in the Spotlight

A procurement forecast from the State Department lists a $400 million budget for “armored Tesla (production units),” strongly suggesting the Cybertruck as the vehicle of choice, given Musk’s claims that the electric pickup is bulletproof.

Musk, who owns Tesla and multiple other ventures, including SpaceX, is one of the largest beneficiaries of US government contracts. While his stake in Tesla makes up the majority of his $383 billion fortune, SpaceX is the US government’s primary space launch contractor.

Musk’s Involvement in Government Cost-Cutting

Adding another layer of complexity, Musk has been appointed to head the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—an initiative within the Trump administration focused on eliminating wasteful government spending. However, the program has drawn criticism, with experts arguing that its methods may be unconstitutional and legally questionable.

The $400 million Tesla procurement deal raises questions about whether Musk’s government influence could create ethical conflicts, given his dual roles as a business leader and a political insider.

Musk Responds to the $400M Deal

Musk addressed the procurement news in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating:

“I’m pretty sure Tesla isn’t getting $400M. No one mentioned it to me, at least.”

He also suggested that other contractors may be involved in modifying the vehicles based on required security specifications.

Sudden Changes in Procurement Listings

The State Department’s procurement document originally listed Tesla by name in an entry dated December 13, 2024—a month after Trump’s election but before he officially took office. However, on Wednesday evening, after independent outlet Drop Site News reported the story, the document was modified. The updated version removed Tesla’s name, instead listing the purchase as "armored electric vehicles (EVs)" with no specified manufacturer.

This procurement document also includes additional armored vehicle contracts, including:

  • $50M for an "armored sedan"
  • $40M for an "armored EV (not sedan)"
  • $40M for "armored BMW X5/X7"

These purchases highlight the government’s growing investment in electric and armored vehicles, although Tesla’s direct involvement remains under scrutiny.

Final Thoughts

As the State Department moves forward with its Tesla Cybertruck procurement, scrutiny over Musk’s influence on government spending and policy will likely intensify. With his dual role as both a government advisor and a major contractor, this deal adds fuel to the ongoing debate about conflicts of interest in the public sector.

Whether Tesla ultimately secures the full $400 million deal or shares the contract with other vendors remains uncertain. However, the modification of the procurement listing suggests an attempt to avoid public scrutiny—a move that will only spark more questions about the transparency of government contracts involving Musk and his companies.
