Suzuki Jimny Three-Door on Hold in Australia Due to New Safety Regulations

New Safety Mandates Put Suzuki Jimny Three-Door on Hold

The beloved Suzuki Jimny three-door has temporarily halted production for the Australian market as it currently does not comply with newly introduced crash-avoidance safety regulations. Suzuki Australia is actively working on a solution, assuring customers that existing stock will continue to be available for now.

New regulations for crash-avoidance technology have temporarily halted the production of the Suzuki Jimny three-door for the Australian market.

While the Jimny XL five-door remains unaffected, the return of the three-door model depends on modifications to its autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system. Sources suggest the updated version could arrive later this year if the necessary engineering enhancements are made.

Stricter AEB Standards Impacting Jimny and Other Models

The new regulations—ADR 98/00—mandate advanced AEB technology capable of detecting imminent rear-end collisions and automatically applying the brakes. Although the three-door Jimny already features AEB, its system does not fully align with the updated operating parameters required for all new vehicles of its type from March 1, 2025.

In contrast, the Jimny XL, which was launched after March 1, 2023, already meets these regulations due to its more advanced AEB system.

Suzuki Australia’s Managing Director, Michael Pachota, addressed the situation in a statement:

“Jimny XL is unaffected. The Jimny three-door currently does not meet the newly introduced ADR requirements. However, investigations to overcome this issue are underway. Sales will continue in 2025, and further information will be provided when possible.”

Suzuki and Other Automakers Affected by New Rules

The Jimny is not the only model impacted by the new AEB mandates. Several other vehicles are set to be phased out, including:

  • Mitsubishi ASX, Pajero Sport, and Eclipse Cross

  • Mazda 6 sedan and wagon

  • Suzuki Ignis, S-Cross, Vitara, and Swift Sport

The Ignis, which lacks AEB entirely, will be discontinued, while the current S-Cross, Vitara, and Swift Sport do not meet the updated Australian standards. However, Suzuki plans to introduce updated versions of the Vitara and S-Cross later this year, equipped with compliant AEB systems. The future of the next-generation Swift Sport remains uncertain.

What This Means for Suzuki’s Sales in Australia

If Suzuki does not upgrade the three-door Jimny to meet the new safety standards, it could leave a significant gap in the brand’s Australian lineup. The model was a major contributor to Suzuki’s success last year, with nearly 10,000 units sold across both the three-door and five-door variants. This accounted for almost half of Suzuki’s total sales of 21,278 vehicles in Australia.

For now, Suzuki fans can still get their hands on the existing three-door Jimny while stocks last, but its long-term availability will depend on the company’s ability to integrate the necessary AEB improvements. With updates expected later this year, enthusiasts will be eagerly awaiting Suzuki’s next move.
