Australia's New Car Safety Regulations for the Upcoming Cars in 2026: Popular Models Face the Axe

Starting March 1, 2025, Australia will enforce stricter car safety regulations, requiring all new vehicles to feature car-to-car autonomous emergency braking (AEB) as standard. This change, known as ADR 98/00, aims to reduce rear-end collisions by automatically applying brakes to prevent or mitigate crashes.

While many manufacturers have already integrated AEB into their vehicles, some models, such as the Mahindra Scorpio and LDV T60, currently lack this technology and could face discontinuation. Automakers will be able to sell existing stock produced before the deadline, but without updates, affected models may vanish from the market entirely.

This regulation builds on a 2023 mandate requiring AEB for newly-introduced models and anticipates further changes in August 2026, when car-to-pedestrian AEB will also become compulsory.

The rules align Australia’s safety standards with those in Europe, ensuring consumers benefit from advanced safety technologies. However, these updates may result in higher car prices as manufacturers absorb the costs of upgrading their vehicles.

Stay tuned for updates on the models affected and how these changes will shape Australia’s automotive landscape.
